Pusa Barkha Cucumber Variety

1. Origin & Breeding:

   • Developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi.

   • Specifically bred for rainy season (kharif) cultivation.
2. Plant Characteristics:

   • Growth Habit: Vigorous, spreading type with strong vines.

   • Leaf: Dark green, healthy foliage resistant to fungal diseases.
   • Flowering: Early flowering variety, which ensures quick fruit set even during rainy weather.
3. Fruit Characteristics:

   • Shape & Size: Medium-long, cylindrical fruits with smooth, dark green skin.

   • Weight: Average fruit weight around 200–250 g.
   • Quality: Crisp, tender, and excellent for slicing and salads.
   • Shelf Life: Good keeping quality; resistant to fruit cracking in heavy rains.
4. Yield:

   • High-yielding variety with average yield of 150–200 q/ha under proper management.

5. Disease Resistance:

   • Shows resistance to downy mildew, a common problem in cucumbers during the monsoon.

6. Cultivation Notes:

   • Best sown in nursery beds or directly in the field during the onset of monsoon.

   • Requires trellising for better fruit quality and reduced disease incidence.
   • Responds well to fertilizers and irrigation management for optimum yield.
