Athira (PTB-51) is a high-yielding, short-to-medium duration paddy variety developed by Kerala Agricultural University (Pattambi). It matures in 130–135 days, making it suitable for growing during both the Kharif (Virippu/monsoon) and Rabi (Mundakan/winter) sowing seasons. The standard seed rate is approximately 80–100 kg per hectare for direct broadcasting and 30–40 kg per hectare when raised in nurseries for transplanting. It yields an average of 2.0 to 5.5 tonnes per hectare (approx. 20–50 quintals/ha) under optimal crop management. Athira features semi-dwarf, non-lodging plants with medium-slender grains, efficient nitrogen utilization, and moderate resistance to major regional pests and diseases.
