| Instructions | To ensure an accurate diagnosis and successful treatment of H. pylori, strict adherence to clinical protocols is essential. Patients must undergo a "washout period" before testing, which involves stopping all antibiotics and bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) at least four weeks prior, and ceasing proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole two weeks before the test to avoid false-negative results. For the Urea Breath Test, a fast of at least four to six hours is required. If collecting a stool sample, the specimen must be kept free of contamination from urine or toilet water and should be refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C immediately, then delivered to a laboratory within 24 to 72 hours. Once treatment begins, usually via a 10- to 14-day regimen of multiple antibiotics and acid-blockers, the most critical instruction is to complete the entire course of medication, even if symptoms disappear, to prevent the bacteria from developing antibiotic resistance and ensuring total eradication. |
