The word has its roots in the ancient word soro, which refers to the act of driving animals with a stick. Sohrai painting is practised by the women of several indigenous communities, including the Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Agaria, Kurmi, Ghatwal, Ganju and Prajapati communities.2
