The modern word guitar and its antecedents have applied to a wide variety of chordophones since classical times. Consequently, this sometimes causes confusion. The Spanish guitarra, for instance, gave rise to the English word guitar, the German Gitarre, and the French guitare, which, in turn, come from the Andalusian Arabic قيثارة (qīthārah) and the Latin cithara. Furthermore, the Latin cithara, which in turn came from the Ancient Greek κιθάρα, is of uncertain ultimate origin. Notably, the Bible mentions kithara four times (1 Cor. 14:7, Rev. 5:8, 14:2, and 15:2); therefore, translators usually render it into English as harp.

Interestingly, no one knows the origins of the modern guitar. Before the development of the electric guitar and the use of synthetic materials, people defined a guitar as an instrument having "a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard, ribs, and a flat back, most often with incurved sides." Moreover, the term refers to a number of chordophones that developers created and used across Europe, beginning in the 12th century and, later, in the Americas. Additionally, a 3,300-year-old stone carving shows a Hittite bard playing a stringed instrument, which is the oldest iconographic representation of a chordophone. Finally, clay plaques from Babylonia depict people playing a lute-like instrument similar to the guitar, this provides a basic history of the instrument.
