"Asafoetida" actually means "a resin that smells bad" in Latin.  However, you will rarely find an Indian kitchen without Asafoetida.  Asafoetida is popularly called Hing in Hindi / Urdu / Punjabi, Perungayam in Tamil, Devil's Dung in English, Hing in Marathi, Inguva in Telugu, Kayam in Malayalam, Hinga in Gujarati, Ingu in Kannada, Hingu in Sanskrit, and Hengu in Oriya.

How to Use

• This spice is used in food as a condiment, and in pickling. It typically works as a flavour enhancer and, used along with turmeric, is a standard component of Indian cuisine, particularly in lentil curries such as dal, sambar, rasam, as well as in various dry and gravy curries. 
• Asafoetida is considered a digestive in that it reduces flatulence.
• You can also use it as a home remedy for menstrual pain ear ache, body pain, asthma, to get rid of intestinal worms and toothache.
