Allspice is the dried berry of the West Indian allspice tree and it looks like a large, smooth peppercorn. In India, there are a few trees in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Allspice is also known as Jamaican pepper or pimento because it tastes like a combination of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and pepper. The berries are picked before they fully ripe and sundried to get the slightly shriveled, hard berries known as allspice. The dried berries measure 6.5 to 9.5 mm in diameter and there are 13 to 14 berries per gram. Allspice is commonly used in desserts, chilis, soups, meat dishes, sauces, curries etc..It has medicinal, anti-microbial, insecticidal, nematicidal, anti-oxidant and deodorant properties. Because of these properties it can be used as pain reliever, and can be used to increase circulation, protect the gastrointestinal system, improve mood, boost the immune system, eliminate fungal infections, lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
