Description:

Long Pepper

The product is the fruit a flowering vine piper longum. It also goes by the name Indian Long Pepper or pippali(thippali in Malayalam). The sun dried ripe fruit of the vine is valued as a spice as well as an essential ingredient in ayurvedic medicines. Speculations about the ani-cancer properties of Indian long pepper also prevails, due to the presence of a chemical Piperlongumine. Along with other herbs it is used to treat digestive disorders, respiratory disorders and liver diseases. In India, it is a traditional home remedy for cold and cough related problems. Though similar to black pepper in taste it is much spicier and aromatic than that. It is used along with other spices to make spice blends. Can be used as spice in vegetable pickles and adds flavor to rasam, a favourite South Indian soup. Its flavor complements meats and cheese and would be delicious in curries and stews.

As all our whole spices and spice powders are free of any kind of preservatives chances are there for them to catch white patches or fungus if exposed to even a little bit of moisture. Here are some tips to store them fresh longer.

  1. Always keep the products in an airtight jar away from moisture.
  2. You can transfer a little from the pack to a small airtight jar and can keep the rest in refrigerator.
  3. You can transfer the product into a clean paper or (muram) in direct sunlight for half an hour and put them back in container.
  4. Buy according to your usage. There are products available in 50g, 100g and 500g packs.
  5. Sautee the spices in a pan on low flame just before putting them to curry so as to get nice aroma
