Understanding Volumetric Weight

When fulfilling customer orders, it’s essential to provide accurate weight and size details for each product. One of the most important factors in this process is volumetric weight.

What is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight (also known as dimensional weight) is a shipping calculation that reflects how much space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.

Shipping carriers charge based on whichever is greater:

  • The actual weight (in kilograms), or

  • The volumetric weight of the parcel.

How is Volumetric Weight Calculated?

The standard volumetric weight formula used by most carriers in India is:

Volumetric Weight (in kg) = (Length × Breadth × Height in cm) ÷ 5000

Example:

Let’s say a product’s package dimensions are:

  • Length: 40 cm

  • Breadth: 30 cm

  • Height: 20 cm

Using the formula:

Volumetric Weight =(40 × 30 × 20) ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg

Now, compare this to the actual weight of the package:

  • If the actual weight is 3 kg, and the volumetric weight is 4.8 kg, the shipping charge will be based on 4.8 kg.
