Kala Namak rice is a special type of rice cultivated in the Tarai region of Uttar Pradesh. Kala Namak rice is grown in a traditional manner. This unique strain of rice has been cultivated for more than 3000 years, since Buddhist Period 600BC, and is also known as the scented black pearl variety. The fragrance of this rice is said to be a gift from LORD BUDDHA himself. The Kala Namak rice was featured in the book Specialty Rices of the World by the food & agriculture organisation of the United Nations. It has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag in 2014 by the Government of India covering only 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh amongst which lies our district Bahraich. If sown elsewhere, it loses its aroma, name and quality. This excellent variety of long duration rice is harvested in the last week of November as it stays in its sweetest state till then. It gets its flavour from the dew that starts to fall by that time, giving this rice its distinct taste. Its unique fragrance, small grain size & taste makes it stand out from others. The reason this rice remains so aromatic is that it’s grown in a specially chosen, naturally rich soil. Our 100% natural farming contains no chemical sprays, fertilisers or insecticides. Its taste adds to the perfection of the meal making it an ideal choice for all types of occasions. It can be used as a fragrant accompaniment to other dishes like kadhi, dal & aloo sabzi. Cooked kalanamak is softer and fluffier than other rice varieties and the grains stick together more readily.
