Amavasya Tarpanam, also known as Pitru Tarpanam or Darsha Shraaddham, is a highly revered Vedic ritual performed on the day of Amavasya (New Moon). This karmic ritual is dedicated to honoring one's departed father, parents, and three generations of ancestors, offering gratitude and spiritual liberation through sacred oblations. While Amavasya Tarpanam holds paramount significance, several other Tarpanam rituals are observed throughout the year, each with its scriptural relevance: • Masa Tarpanam – Performed monthly • Sankramana or Punya Kaala Tarpanam – During solstices and equinoxes • Grahana Tarpanam – During solar and lunar eclipses • Mahalaya Paksha or Punya Kaala Tarpanam • Parehani Tarpanam • Shannavati Tarpanam Among these, Amavasya Tarpanam is considered the most sacred. It is believed to release the performer from the spiritual debt (Pitr Runa) and liberate the ancestors from ‘Puth’, a realm of suffering described in scriptures. Through this sacred act, one not only uplifts the souls of their ancestors but also receives their blessings in the form of dhanam (prosperity), keerthi (reputation), deerga aayu (longevity), svargam (heavenly attainments), mitravardhanam (growth in friendships), and kula vardhanam (progeny), as explained in the Mahabharata and various shastras. • Tarpanam Kit by Giri – Complete Ritual Support To facilitate the traditional observance of Amavasya Tarpanam, Giri offers a specially curated Tarpanam Kit, which includes: 1. Pavitram – A sacred ring made from odd-numbered Darba grass (3, 5, or 7 strands), worn on the ring finger during the ritual 2. Koorcham – Bundles of Darba used to invoke the presence of one’s departed ancestors 3. Katta Pul – Supportive darbams placed during the ritual for sanctity and alignment 4. Yajnopaveetam (Poonal / Janeoo / Jaanva) – Available in pairs or triplets, optionally worn during the ceremony 5. Religious Events Calendar – A comprehensive almanac listing Tarpanam dates with corresponding tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, and sankalpam details
