The two superpowers were at odds primarily due to both their desires for global influence, bolstered by widely different ideological viewpoints that lead to much strife. Called the “cold” war due to a lack of any direct attacks, the rise of nuclear arsenal on both ends prevented either from preemptively engaging in an all-out war due to mutually-assured nuclear destruction. This rivalry reflected in all forms of geopolitical and cultural incidents, including the Space Race, espionage, strict embargoes and psychological warfare, only coming to an end after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
